The Communication Clinic of Connecticut services children with speech and language difficulties between the ages of one year and 21 years. While most of our population involves children who have been diagnosed as being on the Autistic Spectrum, some of our children have the diagnoses of Speech Apraxia, Receptive language disorder and/or expressive language disorder, and Downs Syndrome. For the most part, we see children individually for therapy. However, when the children are ready, if an appropriate peer is available, we will place the children in dyads.  As it is our philosophy to address the whole child, when appropriate, we will work on thinking skills and relatedness skills in addition to the speech and language needs. The relatedness skills are approached through Relationship Development Intervention ®, a parent based model.  To support the children’s abilities to generalize skills, whether it be speaking, thinking or relating, we have a kitchen, a laundry room, a bed, a play room and a bath tub (for water play!) available within the clinic. Finally, as our children are often in the school setting, we will consult to the school systems.  Since it is very important to us that all people interacting with the child understand the work we are doing, we share dvds of our therapy with the parents and the school systems.  When the child comes to therapy, the parents or visiting teachers can either sit in the room and participate or watch through closed circuit television. Again, not only do we believe that we must educate the child, we also believe we must educate those people who spend the most time with the child.
